Biological Background: AKR1C3 Function and Localization
- AKR1C3, also known as 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 5, 3-alpha-HSD type II, DD3, PGFS, and other aliases, is encoded by the AKR1C3 gene in humans.
- It is a cytosolic aldo-keto reductase that catalyzes NADPH-dependent reduction of ketosteroids to hydroxysteroids with broad substrate specificity, primarily generating 17beta-hydroxysteroids.
