Biological Background: Stathmin Function and Localization

• Stathmin (also known as Oncoprotein 18, Op18, p18, p19, and metablastin) is a ubiquitous cytosolic phosphoprotein that regulates microtubule dynamics by promoting depolymerization and preventing polymerization.
• Encoded by the STMN1 gene, stathmin exists in multiple isoforms and is a member of the stathmin family, characterized by a conserved coiled-coil domain.
• Phosphorylation at multiple sites tightly regulates its activity; phosphorylation at Ser-16 may be required for axon formation during neurogenesis (by similarity).
