Procalcitonin (PCT)

Target Introduction

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a 116 amino acid protein, a propeptide of calcitonin. It is produced by thyroid parafollicular cells and neuroendocrine cells of the lung and intestine. PCT levels in plasma increase during severe bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infections, as well as sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. PCT levels do not typically rise in cases of autoimmune, allergic, or viral infections. It can be used as a parameter to diagnose and monitor the severity of microbial infections. PCT levels correlate with the severity of the infection and decrease with antibiotic treatment.
