Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL)
Target Introduction:
Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), also known as lipocalin-2 (LCN2), is a protein belonging to the lipocalin superfamily. Initially identified in activated neutrophils as an innate antibacterial factor, NGAL is also produced by various other cell types, including kidney tubule cells, in response to injuries. The increased production and release of NGAL from tubular cells following harmful stimuli may serve a self-defensive purpose, activating specific iron-dependent pathways. This mechanism may also underlie NGAL's role in promoting kidney growth and differentiation.
Relationship with Related Diseases:
- Acute Kidney Injury (AKI): NGAL levels can predict the development of AKI following treatments that may be detrimental to the kidneys.
- Unstable Nephropathies: NGAL levels can predict the acute worsening of unstable nephropathies.
- Chronic Renal Diseases: Evidence suggests that NGAL is involved in the pathophysiology of chronic renal diseases such as polycystic kidney disease and glomerulonephritis. NGAL levels correlate with the severity of renal impairment.
Application in IVD:
NGAL is a promising biomarker in clinical nephrology. It can be used in in vitro tests such as immunoturbidimetric assays (IT) and fluorescence immunoassays (FIA). NGAL is used in rapid tests such as test strip format. Performance indicators of the test strip include appearance, migration speed, minimum detection limit, linear range, accuracy, repeatability, inter-batch precision, and stability.
