Micro-albumin (mALB)

Micro-albumin (mALB), also known as urine albumin, is an important blood protein predominantly produced by the liver. Its functions include:

• Balancing blood osmotic pressure.
• Transporting hormones, vitamins, and substances like calcium throughout the body.

Normally, mALB (with a molecular weight of 66kDa) is too large to pass through the glomerular basal membrane. However, kidney diseases can damage the glomerular membrane, increasing its permeability. This leads to excessive excretion of mALB in the urine.

Therefore, mALB is a sensitive biomarker for kidney injury. Testing for mALB allows for early detection of kidney disease, aiding in timely diagnosis and prevention of further deterioration. Higher levels of mALB in urine indicate more severe kidney damage.

Reference Values:

• Healthy individuals: less than 20 mg/L.
• Reversible renal injury: 20 mg/L to 200 mg/L.
• Irreversible renal injury (renal failure or uremia): above 200 mg/L.
