Target Introduction

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a type of antibody (also called immunoglobulin), a protein produced by the immune system. IgE's primary function is to defend the body against potential threats. The body produces different forms of IgE, each specific to a substance that triggers an immune response. Normally, the blood contains small amounts of IgE antibodies. However, elevated levels of IgE can indicate an overreaction to allergens, potentially leading to allergic reactions. High IgE levels may also be associated with parasitic infections and certain immune system conditions.

A total IgE test measures the overall quantity of IgE antibodies present in the blood, representing the sum of all IgE forms. The test does not identify which specific forms of IgE are present.

Total IgE testing is employed in diagnosing certain health conditions, including:

• Infections with parasites.
• Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (an allergic reaction to a fungal lung infection).
• Specific immune disorders or cancers affecting the immune system.
• Asthma tied to allergies.

Although IgE is involved in allergic reactions, total IgE testing alone cannot identify specific allergies or definitively confirm allergies.

Application

The purpose of a total IgE test is to measure the sum of all kinds of IgE antibodies that are in the blood. The test is mainly used for diagnosis and treatment planning.

A total IgE test may be helpful in the diagnostic process for specific health conditions that can cause abnormal total IgE levels.
