Cystatin C (CysC)

Target Introduction:

Cystatin C is a protein produced by all nucleated cells in the body. It is a potent inhibitor of lysosomal proteinases. Its production rate is relatively constant, and it is freely filtered by the glomerulus. In individuals with healthy kidney function, Cystatin C levels in the blood are maintained at appropriate levels. Elevated Cystatin C levels in the blood may indicate impaired kidney function.

Relationship with Related Diseases:

Cystatin C serves as an indicator of kidney function. Elevated levels are associated with reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), suggesting kidney damage or disease. It is used to calculate estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).

Application:

• Kidney Function Assessment: Cystatin C is used as a biomarker to assess kidney function and to calculate eGFR. It provides an alternative or supplementary measure to creatinine-based eGFR calculations.
• Diagnostic Testing: Cystatin C is measured in blood tests to assess kidney function, particularly when creatinine measurements may be less accurate (e.g., in older adults or individuals with variations in muscle mass).
• In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD): Cystatin C antibodies are used in lateral flow (LF), ELISA, and Western blot (WB) assays. Cystatin C detection kits, such as those using colloidal gold, are designed for quantitative determination of CysC levels.
