Target Introduction:
Cystatin C is a protein produced by all nucleated cells in the body. It is a potent inhibitor of lysosomal proteinases. Its production rate is relatively constant, and it is freely filtered by the glomerulus. In individuals with healthy kidney function, Cystatin C levels in the blood are maintained at appropriate levels. Elevated Cystatin C levels in the blood may indicate impaired kidney function.
Relationship with Related Diseases:
Cystatin C serves as an indicator of kidney function. Elevated levels are associated with reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR), suggesting kidney damage or disease. It is used to calculate estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR).
Application:
- Kidney Function Assessment: Cystatin C is used as a biomarker to assess kidney function and to calculate eGFR. It provides an alternative or supplementary measure to creatinine-based eGFR calculations.
