Biological Background: YTHDC2 Function and Localization

  • 3'-5' RNA helicase that plays a key role in the male and female germline by promoting the transition from mitotic to meiotic divisions in stem cells. Related references: PMID:26318451, PMID:29033321, PMID:29970596
  • Specifically recognizes and binds N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-containing RNAs, promoting degradation of m6A-containing mRNAs through its helicase activity, possibly mediated by XRN1 exoribonuclease. Related references: PMID:26318451, PMID:29033321
  • Required for both spermatogenesis and oogenesis (By similarity).
  • Subcellular localization is cytoplasmic, with enrichment in the perinuclear region.
