- VEGFC, also known as Vascular endothelial growth factor C, Flt4 ligand (Flt4-L), or vascular endothelial growth factor-related protein (VRP), is a secreted growth factor encoded by the VEGFC gene.
- It plays a critical role in angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis, stimulating endothelial cell proliferation, migration, and survival, as well as regulating vascular permeability.
- VEGFC exerts its functions by binding and activating the receptor tyrosine kinases KDR/VEGFR2 and FLT4/VEGFR3.
- It is essential for the development of the venous and lymphatic vascular systems during embryogenesis and maintains differentiated lymphatic endothelium in adults.
- VEGFC is a secreted protein, localized extracellularly after processing and signal peptide cleavage.
