• SPARC (Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine), also known as Osteonectin or Basement-membrane protein 40 (BM-40), is a multifunctional matricellular glycoprotein.
• It regulates cell growth and adhesion through interactions with extracellular matrix components and cytokines.
• The protein contains an acidic domain that binds 5 to 8 calcium ions with low affinity, and an EF-hand loop that binds a single calcium ion with high affinity; it also binds copper and several collagen types, albumin, thrombospondin, PDGF, and cell membranes.
• SPARC is secreted into the extracellular space and localizes to the basement membrane and extracellular matrix.
