Biological Background: Survival Motor Neuron Protein Function and Localization
- Survival motor neuron protein (SMN), also known as Gemin-1, is encoded by the SMN1 and SMN2 genes and is a core component of the gemin complex.
- The SMN complex catalyzes the assembly of small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), the building blocks of the spliceosome, and thereby plays an important role in the splicing of cellular pre-mRNAs. Related references: PMID:18984161, PMID:9845364

- For Western blot, a band at approximately 32 kDa is expected; post-translational modifications may cause slight shifts in mobility. Include appropriate positive and negative controls.
- In immunofluorescence/ICC, expect nuclear gem/Cajal body puncta along with diffuse cytoplasmic staining. Optimize permeabilization conditions for the cell type under study.
