Biological Background: SMC4 Function and Localization

• SMC4 (Structural maintenance of chromosomes protein 4) is also known as chromosome-associated polypeptide C (hCAP-C) or XCAP-C homolog.
• Central component of the condensin complex, which is required for the conversion of interphase chromatin into mitotic-like condensed chromosomes.
• The condensin complex, containing SMC4, introduces positive supercoils into relaxed DNA in the presence of type I topoisomerases and converts nicked DNA into positive knotted forms in the presence of type II topoisomerases.
• Localizes to the nucleus, cytoplasm, and chromosomes, consistent with its role in chromosome condensation and segregation during mitosis.
• Widely expressed, with higher expression levels observed in testis, colon, and thymus.
