Biological Background: SIGMAR1 Function and Localization

• SIGMAR1, also known as sigma-1 receptor, SRBP, OPRS1, and hSigmaR1, is a 25 kDa non-opioid intracellular receptor encoded by the SIGMAR1 gene.
• It functions in lipid transport from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and regulates the biogenesis of lipid microdomains at the plasma membrane, impacting multiple signaling pathways.
• SIGMAR1 modulates BDNF and EGF signaling, regulates potassium and other ion channels, and controls ITP3R-dependent calcium efflux at the ER together with ANK2, thereby influencing neurotransmitter release and calcium homeostasis.
