Biological Background: SELENOK Function and Localization
- SELENOK (Selenoprotein K), also designated SELK, HSPC030, or HSPC297, is a member of the selenoprotein family and incorporates selenocysteine in its sequence.
- It is critical for calcium (Ca²⁺) flux in immune cells, thereby promoting T-cell proliferation and neutrophil migration.
- SELENOK participates in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) of soluble glycosylated proteins. Related references: PMID:22016385
- Together with the palmitoyltransferase ZDHHC6, SELENOK mediates palmitoylation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor type 1 (ITPR1) in immune cells, modulating ITPR1 stability and function. Related references: PMID:25368151
