Biological Background: S100B Function and Localization

  • Small zinc- and calcium-binding protein highly expressed in astrocytes; constitutes one of the most abundant soluble proteins in brain. Binds zinc tightly and calcium weakly, with distinct binding sites for both ions on each monomer. Related references: PMID:20950652 PMID:6487634
  • Functions as a neurotrophic factor, promoting astrocytosis and axonal proliferation; also acts as an adipocyte-derived neurotrophic factor to promote sympathetic innervation of thermogenic adipose tissue.
