• Intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1, CD54) is a cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, existing as multiple isoforms due to alternative splicing.
• Serves as a receptor ligand for the integrins ITGAL:ITGB2 (LFA-1) and ITGAM:ITGB2 (Mac-1), mediating leukocyte cell-cell adhesion and regulating T-cell killing strength in an antigen-dependent manner.
• Facilitates leukocyte trans-endothelial migration by promoting the formation of endothelial apical cups through ARHGEF26/SGEF and RHOG activation.
• Contributes to epithelial cell aggregation through interaction with MUC1.
• Localized to the cell membrane and expressed at low levels on lymphocyte subpopulations, macrophages, and endothelial cells, with strong induction on fibroblasts and epithelial cells upon stimulation.
