Biological Background: CD31/PECAM1 Function and Localization

• CD31 (PECAM-1) is a platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, involved in cell-cell adhesion.
• It plays a critical role in leukocyte transendothelial migration (TEM); phosphorylation at Tyr-679 is essential for trafficking to the lateral border recycling compartment (LBRC).
• Homophilic interactions mediate endothelial cell junction integrity, while heterophilic binding to CD177 facilitates neutrophil transendothelial migration.
