Biological Background: IL-13 Function and Localization

  • Interleukin-13 (IL-13) is a secreted cytokine primarily produced by T-cells, originally identified as T-cell activation protein P600 (UniProt: P20109).
  • Plays a key role in allergic inflammation and immune response to parasite infections, synergizing with IL-2 to regulate interferon-gamma synthesis and stimulating B-cell proliferation, eosinophil, basophil, and mast cell activation (By similarity).
  • Antagonizes Th1-driven proinflammatory immune responses by downregulating synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IL-10, IL-12, TNF) partially through suppression of NF-kappa-B (By similarity).
  • Induces vascular cell adhesion protein 1 (VCAM-1) on endothelial cells, important for eosinophil recruitment, and can affect non-hematopoietic cells.
