Biological Background: Transferrin Receptor Protein 1 (CD71) Function and Localization

  • Transferrin receptor protein 1 (TfR1, CD71) is encoded by the Tfrc gene in mice and is also known as TR, TFR, p90, TFR1, Trfr, Mtvr1, 2610028K12Rik, and E430033M20Rik.
  • Mediates cellular iron uptake via receptor-mediated endocytosis: binds iron-loaded transferrin, internalizes into endosomes where acidification releases iron, then recycles apotransferrin-receptor complex to the surface.
  • Essential for erythrocyte and nervous system development (by similarity).
  • Positively regulates T and B cell proliferation through iron uptake upon stimulation.
