• CD4, also known as L3T4 or Ly-4, is a T-cell surface glycoprotein that serves as a coreceptor for MHC class II molecules, playing a critical role in T-cell activation and immune response.
• It interacts simultaneously with the T-cell receptor (TCR) and MHC class II on antigen-presenting cells, recruiting the Src kinase LCK to initiate intracellular signaling cascades leading to lymphokine production, adhesion, and T-helper cell activation.
• CD4 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, containing four extracellular Ig-like domains, a single transmembrane helix, and a short cytoplasmic tail.
