Biological Background: CD274/PD-L1 Function and Localization
- Programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (CD274), also known as B7 homolog 1 (B7-H1), is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily and serves as a ligand for the inhibitory receptor PDCD1/PD-1.
- Plays a critical role in induction and maintenance of immune tolerance to self, and modulates the activation threshold of T-cells, limiting T-cell effector response. Related references: PMID:11238124
- Through a yet unknown activating receptor, CD274 may costimulate T-cell subsets that predominantly produce interleukin-10 (IL10). Related references: PMID:11015443, PMID:12719480
- The PDCD1/PD-1 inhibitory pathway is exploited by tumors to attenuate anti-tumor immunity, facilitating tumor survival.
