- Integrin alpha-M (CD11b) is a leukocyte-specific integrin that pairs with integrin beta-2 (CD18) to form the Mac-1 heterodimer, also known as complement receptor 3 (CR3).
- It facilitates adhesive interactions of monocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes, mediating the uptake of complement-coated particles and pathogens by binding the iC3b fragment of complement component C3.
- ITGAM/ITGB2 also serves as a receptor for fibrinogen and factor X, recognizing specific peptide sequences in the fibrinogen gamma chain, contributing to coagulation and inflammatory responses.
- The protein is predominantly expressed in monocytes, granulocytes, and microglia, with expression also observed in subsets of peritoneal mast cells.
