- Integrin alpha-E (CD103), also known as integrin alpha M290, is encoded by the Itgae gene in mouse and is a member of the integrin alpha chain family.
- It pairs non-covalently with integrin beta-7 (ITGB7) to form the alpha-E/beta-7 heterodimer, which serves as a receptor for epithelial cadherin (E-cadherin).
- The integrin alpha-E/beta-7 complex mediates the adhesion of intra-epithelial T lymphocytes to epithelial cell monolayers, facilitating tissue residency.
- CD103 is a single-pass type I membrane protein with a large extracellular domain containing ligand-binding and calcium-binding regions, a transmembrane helix, and a short cytoplasmic tail.
- The extracellular region includes several integrin alpha repeats and a von Willebrand factor type A domain (predicted), and the protein is N-glycosylated.
