Biological Background: β2 Microglobulin Function and Localization

• Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a component of the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and is involved in the presentation of peptide antigens to the immune system.
• Exogenously applied Mycobacterium tuberculosis EsxA or EsxA-EsxB binds B2M and decreases its export to the cell surface, potentially leading to defects in class I antigen presentation. Related references: PMID:25356553
• B2M is a secreted protein that is also found on the cell surface.
• The protein contains an immunoglobulin domain and has a molecular weight of approximately 13.7 kDa.
