Biological Background: Desmoglein-3 Function and Localization
- Desmoglein-3 (DSG3), also termed 130 kDa pemphigus vulgaris antigen (PVA) or Cadherin family member 6 (CDHF6), is a calcium-binding transmembrane glycoprotein of the cadherin superfamily.
- DSG3 functions as a core desmosome component essential for strong intercellular adhesion, required for desmosome-mediated cell-cell attachment in keratinocytes and for anchoring telogen hair clubs in the follicle. Related references: PMID:31835537 PMID:9701552
- In keratinocytes, mechanical force triggers DSG3-dependent assembly of adherens and desmosome junctions; DSG3 also recruits YAP1 to the plasma membrane via a protein complex containing PKP1 and YWHAG, potentially modulating YAP1-mediated transcription and proliferation.
