Biological Background: Macrosialin (CD68) Function and Localization
- CD68, also known as macrosialin or GP110, is a heavily glycosylated transmembrane protein encoded by the CD68 gene on human chromosome 17. Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
- It primarily functions in phagocytic activities of tissue macrophages, participating in intracellular lysosomal metabolism and extracellular cell-cell/cell-pathogen interactions.
- CD68 binds to tissue- and organ-specific lectins or selectins, facilitating macrophage homing to specific sites. Its rapid recycling from endosomes/lysosomes to the plasma membrane may support cellular crawling over selectin-bearing substrates.
