Biological Background: CEACAM1 Function and Localization

  • CEACAM1 (also known as BGP-1, CD66a) is a cell adhesion molecule belonging to the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family, encoded by the CEACAM1 gene (GeneID: 634) on chromosome 19.
  • It functions as a calcium-independent homophilic cell adhesion molecule and a key coinhibitory receptor in immune responses, negatively regulating T cell receptor-mediated cytotoxicity, proliferation, and cytokine production, as well as NK cell cytolysis and neutrophil activation.   • The protein is involved in insulin signaling by promoting insulin clearance and regulating lipogenesis, and it acts as an activator in angiogenesis, enhancing endothelial cell differentiation and vascular remodeling.
