• CD146, also designated MUC18 or MCAM, is a cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, encoded by the MCAM gene (GeneID: 4162). Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
• It mediates calcium-independent cell adhesion and contributes to the integrity of the endothelial monolayer at intercellular junctions in vascular tissue.
• In melanoma, CD146 expression is thought to enable tumor cells to interact with the vascular endothelium, thereby promoting hematogenous dissemination and metastasis.
