Biological Background: ULK1 Function and Localization

• Serine/threonine-protein kinase involved in autophagy in response to starvation. Acts upstream of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase PIK3C3 to regulate the formation of autophagophores. • The ULK1 gene encodes the human homolog of yeast ATG1, a key autophagy initiator, and is a member of the unc-51-like kinase family.
