Biological Background: Axl Function and Localization

• AXL encodes the tyrosine-protein kinase receptor UFO, also known as Axl oncogene. It is a member of the TAM family of receptor tyrosine kinases and undergoes alternative splicing.
• Acts as a receptor for growth arrest-specific 6 (GAS6), transducing signals that regulate cell survival, proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Ligand binding induces dimerization and autophosphorylation, leading to downstream activation of the PI3K-AKT pathway via recruitment of GRB2 and PI3K regulatory subunits.
