Biological Background: Endoglin Function and Localization
- Endoglin is a transmembrane glycoprotein primarily expressed on vascular endothelial cells, also known as cell surface MJ7/18 antigen.
- It plays an essential role in angiogenesis and is required for normal extraembryonic angiogenesis and embryonic heart development. Related references: PMID:10625534
- Endoglin regulates the migration of vascular endothelial cells, contributing to vascular remodeling. Related references: PMID:17540773
- It may regulate endothelial cell shape changes in response to blood flow, driving establishment of normal vascular morphology during angiogenesis. Related references: PMID:28530658
- Acts as a TGF-beta coreceptor, involved in TGF-beta/BMP signaling cascades leading to SMAD transcription factor activation. Related references: PMID:23300529
- Required for GDF2/BMP9 signaling through SMAD1 and modulates TGFB1 signaling through SMAD3.
