Biological Background: Integrin alpha-M (CD11b) Function and Localization

  • Integrin alpha-M (ITGAM/CD11b) is also known as CD11 antigen-like family member B, CR-3 alpha chain, MAC-1 subunit alpha, MO1, and neutrophil adherence receptor.
  • ITGAM combines with ITGB2 (CD18) to form the Mac-1 integrin, which mediates adhesive interactions of monocytes, macrophages, and granulocytes and facilitates the uptake of complement-coated particles and pathogens. Related references: PMID:20008295 PMID:9558116
  • Mac-1 functions as the receptor for the iC3b fragment of complement component C3 and also serves as a receptor for fibrinogen and factor X.
