Biological Background: CD24 Function and Localization

• CD24, also known as heat stable antigen (HSA), is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored glycoprotein and signal transducer expressed on various hematopoietic cells.
• It plays a pivotal role in cell differentiation, particularly in early thymocyte development, and modulates B-cell activation responses.
• CD24 signaling may be triggered by lectin-like ligand binding, leading to release of second messengers from the GPI-anchor.
