Biological Background: ICOS/CD278 Function and Localization
- Inducible T-cell costimulator (ICOS), also known as CD278, AILIM, CCLP, or CRP-1, is a 22 kDa transmembrane receptor of the CD28 immunoglobulin superfamily.
- Expressed on activated T-cells and resting memory T-cells; high expression in thymic medulla, lymph node germinal centers, T-cell zones, and Peyer’s patches; low in spleen.
- Localized to the cell membrane as a single-pass type I transmembrane protein.
- Delivers costimulatory signals to T-cells upon binding to ICOSL on antigen-presenting cells, enhancing proliferation, cytokine secretion (e.g., IL-10), and expression of adhesion molecules. Related references: PMID:11343123, PMID:10657606
