Biological Background: Homeobox Protein NANOG Function and Localization
- NANOG is a homeobox transcription factor that maintains embryonic stem (ES) cell self-renewal and pluripotency by regulating inner cell mass proliferation. Related references: PMID:25825768
- It prevents ES cell differentiation into extraembryonic endoderm and trophectoderm lineages, and blocks BMP-induced mesoderm differentiation through physical interaction with SMAD1.
- NANOG can function as both a transcriptional activator and repressor, binding optimally to the DNA consensus sequence 5'-TAAT[GT][GT]-3' or 5'-[CG][GA][CG]C[GC]ATTAN[GC]-3'.
