Biological Background: Nectin-1 Function and Localization

• Nectin-1 (also designated PVRL1, CD111, HveC) is a member of the nectin family of immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecules.
• It mediates cell-cell adhesion through homophilic and heterophilic trans-dimerization with NECTIN3 or NECTIN4, and is critical for nervous system development, including axon guidance, synaptogenesis, and neurite outgrowth. Related references: PMID:21325282
• Nectin-1 is also required for enamel mineralization and the establishment of checkerboard-like cellular patterns in the auditory epithelium through heterophilic interactions with NECTIN3.
