Biological Background: IL-4 Function and Localization
- IL-4, also known as B-cell stimulatory factor 1 (BSF-1), is a cytokine encoded by the IL4 gene, with alternative splicing producing multiple isoforms.
- Secreted primarily by mast cells, T-cells, eosinophils, and basophils.
- It induces expression of class II MHC molecules on resting B-cells, enhances secretion and surface expression of IgE and IgG1, and regulates CD23 expression on lymphocytes and monocytes.
