- HMOX1 (heme oxygenase 1), also known as HO-1 or HSP32, is a ~33 kDa enzyme encoded by the HMOX1 gene (GeneID: 3162). It belongs to the heme oxygenase family.
- Catalyzes the rate-limiting step in heme degradation, cleaving the heme ring at the alpha-methene bridge to yield equimolar amounts of biliverdin IXalpha, carbon monoxide (CO), and ferrous iron (PubMed:11121422, PubMed:19556236, PubMed:7703255).
