Biological Background: CD55 (DAF) Function and Localization
- CD55 (complement decay-accelerating factor), also known as DAF, CR, TC, CROM, or CHAPLE, is a GPI-anchored membrane glycoprotein that plays a critical role in regulating the complement system.
- CD55 recognizes C4b and C3b fragments, interfering with their ability to catalyze the formation of C4b2a and C3bBb convertases (PubMed:7525274). It inhibits complement activation by destabilizing and preventing the formation of C3 and C5 convertases, thereby protecting host cells from complement damage (PubMed:28657829). - It localizes primarily to the cell membrane via a GPI anchor but is also found in secreted forms in body fluids and extracellular matrix.
