Biological Background: CD39/ENTPD1 Function and Localization
- Ectonucleoside triphosphate diphosphohydrolase 1 (ENTPD1, also known as CD39, NTPDase1, ATPDase) is a membrane-bound enzyme belonging to the ENTPDase family.
- Catalyzes the sequential hydrolysis of nucleoside triphosphates (NTPs) to nucleoside monophosphates (NMPs) via nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) intermediates, playing a critical role in regulating extracellular nucleotide levels. Related references: PMID:8529670, PMID:8626624, PMID:8955160
- By hydrolyzing proinflammatory ATP and platelet-activating ADP to AMP, CD39 blocks platelet aggregation and supports blood flow. Related references: PMID:8955160, PMID:8996251
- Subcellularly localized to the plasma membrane and enriched in caveolae, consistent with its role as an ectoenzyme.
