- CD1c (T-cell surface glycoprotein CD1c), also designated R7, CD1, CD1A, and BDCA1, is a member of the CD1 family of antigen-presenting molecules that present lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells.
- CD1c binds both self and non-self lipid antigens and presents them to T-cell receptors on natural killer T-cells, playing a key role in adaptive immunity.
- The protein is a type I membrane glycoprotein containing an immunoglobulin-like domain and is expressed on the surface of cortical thymocytes, certain T-cell leukemias, and a variety of other tissues.
- Subcellularly, CD1c localizes to the cell membrane, endosome membrane, and lysosome, consistent with its role in lipid antigen sampling and presentation.
- Post-translational modifications include glycosylation and the formation of a critical disulfide bond, which contribute to its structural stability and immune function.
- The mature protein has a molecular weight of approximately 37.7 kDa (predicted), with an extracellular domain that mediates lipid binding and T-cell receptor engagement.
