  • It processes various bioactive peptides including angiotensin III and IV, neuropeptides, and chemokines, thereby regulating blood pressure, neural signaling, and immune responses.
  • CD13 is implicated in angiogenesis and cholesterol crystallization, and it may promote tumor growth and metastasis by facilitating endothelial cell migration and invasion.
  • The protein serves as a receptor for human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) and mediates human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection, highlighting its role in host-pathogen interactions.
  • Subcellularly, CD13 is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein located primarily on the cell membrane, with a large extracellular domain containing the catalytic site.
  • Tissue expression is broad: it is found on epithelial cells of the kidney, intestine, and respiratory tract; granulocytes, monocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and pericytes; also in synovial fibroblasts and activated lymphocytes.
