- Osteocalcin (BGLAP), also known as Bone Gla protein (BGP), is a small secreted protein belonging to the osteocalcin family.

- Uncarboxylated osteocalcin functions as a hormone, regulating energy metabolism by promoting pancreatic β-cell proliferation, insulin secretion, and sensitivity.
- It plays a role in male fertility by stimulating testosterone production in Leydig cells through the GPRC6A receptor.
- Osteocalcin crosses the blood-brain barrier and acts via GPR158 to support brain development, preventing neuronal apoptosis and modulating neurotransmitter synthesis.
- The protein is secreted and undergoes γ-carboxylation, forming gamma-carboxyglutamic acid residues essential for its calcium-binding activity.
