- MSR1 encodes macrophage scavenger receptor types I and II, also known as CD204 or SCARA1, which belong to the class A scavenger receptor family and undergo alternative splicing to generate multiple isoforms (Isoform I, II, and III).
- The receptor functions as a membrane glycoprotein that binds, endocytoses, and phagocytoses a broad range of ligands, including modified low-density lipoproteins such as acetylated LDL and oxidized LDL, thereby promoting cholesterol uptake and contributing to foam cell formation during atherogenesis.
