• MMP19, also referred to as MMP-18 or RASI-1, is a member of the matrix metalloproteinase family that plays a critical role in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling.
• This endopeptidase degrades a broad range of ECM components, including aggrecan, cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), collagen type IV, laminin, nidogen, fibronectin, and type I gelatin, and is implicated in angiogenesis and neovascularization.
• The enzyme is secreted into the extracellular space and localizes to the ECM.
• MMP19 contains conserved domains typical of MMPs: a signal peptide, a propeptide with a cysteine switch motif, a catalytic domain with a zinc-binding site, and a hemopexin-like C-terminal domain; its activity is calcium- and zinc-dependent.
• Post-translational modifications include glycosylation, disulfide bond formation, and phosphorylation, and the protein exists as a zymogen requiring proteolytic activation.
