Biological Background: LYAR Function and Localization
- LYAR (cell growth-regulating nucleolar protein, also known as ZLYAR or ZC2HC2) is a zinc-finger-containing protein with a predicted molecular weight of ~44 kDa; it functions as a DNA-binding transcriptional regulator.
- Plays a central role in pre-rRNA processing: maintains appropriate processing of 47S/45S pre-rRNA to 32S/30S pre-rRNAs and their subsequent conversion to mature 18S and 28S rRNAs (PubMed:24495227). Related references: PMID:24495227
- Acts as a transcriptional repressor: together with PRMT5, binds the gamma-globin (HBG1/HBG2) promoter and represses its expression; preferentially binds the DNA motif 5'-GGTTAT-3' (PubMed:25092918). Related references: PMID:25092918
