Biological Background: ERK2 Function and Localization
- ERK2, encoded by the MAPK1 gene, is also known as mitogen-activated protein kinase 1, extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2, MAP kinase isoform p42, and MAPK2. It is a serine/threonine kinase essential to the MAPK/ERK signal transduction cascade, functioning alongside ERK1 (MAPK3) in response to diverse stimuli.
- ERK2 mediates a wide array of cellular processes including cell growth, adhesion, survival, differentiation, transcription regulation, translation, cytoskeletal rearrangements, and apoptosis through phosphorylation of over 160 identified substrates.
