  • Functions as a critical adhesion molecule by serving as a receptor for integrins ITGAL:ITGB2 (LFA-1) and ITGAM:ITGB2 (MAC-1), mediating leukocyte cell-cell adhesion and neutrophil-endothelial interactions.
  • Provides a calibrated system to adjust T-cell killing to antigen stimulation strength via LFA-1 binding.
  • During leukocyte trans-endothelial migration, ICAM-1 engagement promotes endothelial apical cup assembly through ARHGEF26/SGEF and RHOG activation.
  • In epithelial cells, interaction with MUC1 promotes cell aggregation.
  • Localizes to the cell membrane as a single-pass type I transmembrane protein.
