Biological Background: GLB1 Function and Localization

  • GLB1 (acid beta-galactosidase, elastin receptor 1) is a lysosomal enzyme that hydrolyzes terminal beta-linked galactose residues from glycoconjugates.
  • Beyond its catalytic function, GLB1 also acts as the elastin-binding protein (EBP), a molecular chaperone that facilitates tropoelastin secretion and elastic fiber assembly in connective tissues.
  • Subcellular localization is primarily lysosomal, with additional detection in the cytoplasm and perinuclear region.
  • It is a glycosylated, disulfide-linked protein synthesized as a zymogen that requires proteolytic activation.
