  • ABAT encodes the mitochondrial enzyme 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase, also known as GABA aminotransferase (GABA-AT), (S)-3-amino-2-methylpropionate transaminase, and L-AIBAT (UniProt: P80404).

  • Catalyzes the conversion of gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) to succinate semialdehyde, a key step in neurotransmitter degradation; also acts on L-beta-aminoisobutyrate to produce methylmalonate semialdehyde. Related references: PMID:10407778 PMID:15528998

  • Can utilize delta-aminovalerate and beta-alanine as substrates (By similarity).
